Obama Signed Order to Close Guantanamo Bay Detention Facility
On Thursday US President Barack Obama issued/signed three historic executive orders indicating clearly that as promised he wants USA to return to “moral high ground”. According to the first order Guantanamo Bay detention facility be closed within a year. While signing, Obama said he was issuing the order to close the facility in order to “restore the standards of due process and the core constitutional values that have made this country great even in the midst of war, even in dealing with terrorism.”
Second executive order bans the use of torture during suspected terrorist’s interrogation. That in essence ends the Bush administration’s notorious CIA program of horrific interrogation methods. He said “This is me following through … on an understanding that dates back to our founding fathers, that we are willing to observe core standards of conduct not just when it’s easy but also when it’s hard.”
The third important executive order is to set up a task force to lead a systematic review of detention policies, procedures and a complete review of all individual cases.
In another order he closed down all CIA prisons operating abroad. The order “states that the CIA shall close any detention facility that it currently operates and shall not operate any such facility in the future”.
We know, everything takes time and issuing of these order will start numerous debates, but one thing is for sure, this’ll send a good message to world nations especially Muslims.
